Networking Tutorial
In this tutorial, we will start with how to configure a simple ethernet
interface and go on to routing, virtual interfaces, VLANs, and on to
packet filter, quality of service, and encrypted VPNs between hosts or
networks. The use of classic networking tools to analyze a network will
be included. The tutorial will include a number of practical exercises.
Participants should know how to use a command line interface and a text editor, and preferrably they ought to have a basic understanding of TCP/IP (what an IP address or a port number are).
- basic interface configuration using ifconfig
- routing on machines with multiple (virtual or real) interfaces
- configuring virtual interfaces, updating arp entries
- explanation of VLANs and their configuration
- how to set up a packet filter using fwbuilder or plain netfilter/iptables
- how to do QoS (quality of service)
- how to set up an encrypted VPN, practical exercise with OpenVPN
- usage of tools like ping, traceroute, tcptraceroute, nmap, tcpdump, ethereal etc. to identify problems
