About Linuxdays

Brief description of Linuxday's goals and the people behind it.

About

What's this all about?
Well, the aim of the LinuxDays is to promote and support the Open Source & Free Software movement. The basic idea of Open Source & Free Software is that developers around the world distribute, modify and test their software via the Internet, resulting in products often exceeding the quality of commercial software. The power and cumulated knowledge of the Open Source & Free Software Community ensures that new features are implemented very quickly and that bugs are fixed the moment they are discovered. The fact that Free Software and most Open Source Software are freely available on the Internet and that their use doesn't require any licenses certainly was for something in the success the concept knows nowadays.
Linux is probably the best known example. Linux is the commonly used name of the whole platform based on a GNU/Linux operating system and providing Free and Open-Source Software packages. The GNU project was originally developed by Richard M. Stallman in the eighties. The Linux kernel (a Free Software UNIX kernel clone), was originally developed by Linus Torvalds in the nineties.

How are we going to do it?
The LinuxDays 2008 in Luxembourg will be held from Tuesday 19th to Wednesday 20th of Februrary 2008. We'd like to present Linux and the Open Source & Free Software Philosophy in its different facets to the Luxembourg public, and this in a form similar to other Linux events in our neighbouring countries, such as, for example the LinuxPark at the Systems, the LinuxTag in Karlsruhe or the Linux World Expo in Frankfurt ...

Our major aims of this year's LinuxDays are:

  • Providing computer scientists and experts with up to date technical presentations about GNU/Linux,
  • Showing decision-makers that the GNU/Linux platform and Open Source & Free Software is a choice worth considering,
  • Presenting GNU/Linux based products in our expo area,
  • Giving local companies the opportunity to present their GNU/Linux based products and services to the public.

Who is behind the LinuxDays?
In order to promote the Open Source & Free Software Idea and to bring it to the Luxembourg public, we -- a group of research scientists from the Centre de Recherche Public Henri Tudor and University of Luxembourg in collaboration with the Linux User Group Luxembourg -- are organising now for the fifth time the LinuxDays in Luxembourg.
